Lithiophorite/ Cryptomelane, Iron Princess Quarry, Iron Knob, SA
Size 5cm x 5cm
A very aesthetic speciman of the recently identified mixture of these two manganese minerals from the iron princess mine. Previously presumed to be goethite but has no radiating needly structure to it like goethite does. Recent analysis has shown these to be a mixture of the two minerals. Mined prior to mine closure in 1997 . Surprisingly very little damage to the speciman considering the free standing stalactites. Very few of these specimans survived the blasting , digging and trucking of the ore. A bit of a pity because this is a quite attractive speciman of cryptomelane and lithiophorite. Pit now closed and mined out.
