Spessartine, Blackwood Opencut, Broken Hill, NSW
SKU: 470
Size 9cm x 5cm
Spessartine is a variety of garnet, and is the most abundant garnet in the main lode at Broken Hill.
This is a excellent example of of decent sized garnet crystals on matrix. The largest garnet crystal is 20mm across, larger than most garnets from these mines. Blackwood opencut was operated from about 1973 to 1990, and recovered ore from the old block 15 lease. This pit was backfilled with waste rock from the block 14 opencut, ensuring no more specimens to ever come out . This is a good sized speciman, with large crystals, and very hard to find one of these today on the market.
