Sampleite, E26 Orebody, North Parkes Mine, Parkes, NSW
Size 7.5cm x 7cm
A decent sized cabinet speciman of this rare mineral, showing bright blue crystallised Sampleite, scattered over a dark matrix.
This was discovered at the mine in the mid 1990's and the material with this in it went onto a waste dump. This dump has now been covered over and rehabilitated, this ensuring no more will ever be recovered. Mindat states that specimans from this mine are amongst the best ever found in the world. The speciman has been cut on the back side to get rid of excessive rock, enabling it to display better. Cut is not visible from the front side. The last photo shows the back of the speciman, with the saw cut (wet), showing the matrix.
Specimans this size were not common at the time and even less common now.
