Quartz, Iron Wizard Opencut, Iron Baron, SA
Size 3 Crystals
Biggest crystal 4cm x 3cm
Smallest crystal 3cm x 2cm
Iron Wizard was a small orebody discovered by drilling, during the last lot of mining activity at Iron Baron. The open pit only ended up with 4 or 5 benches in it before it was closed and backfilled with waste rock from other pits. The only specimans produced were quartz crystals, small pyrolusite crystals and a few goethite specimans, all of which I have on this website. These quartz's were the most unusual ones discovered. Only the points or terminations survived their formation. The termination faces on the tops of the crystals are quite smooth and a bit shiny, while the "stems" or bottoms of the crystals are severely etched away, leaving a relatively undamaged termination on a etched stem, almost like a scepter crystal. All specimans were individual crystals, roughly this size and all had their bottoms etched. Must have been some nasty solutions around many years ago !!
Unusual, and not found anywhere else in the middleback range.
