Pyrolusite, Iron Baron Quarry, Iron Baron, SA
Size 5cm x 3cm
One of the old style pyrolusites from the iron baron pit. Sparkly silver pyrolusite crystals, lining voids in massive matrix. It is actually Pyrolusite after manganite, like most of the pyrolusite from iron knob and iron baron was. Us locals just used to call it pyrolusite though.
Pyrolusite does not photograph very well at all, not for me anyway, so the speciman is better in person than in the photos. Collected by Glyn Francis in the 70's or early 80's. This pit was closed not long after and was not reopened in recent mining. The back of the speciman has been cut to remove excess waste rock, but the cut is not visible from the front.
