Lithiophorite/ Cryptomelane, Iron Princess Quarry, Iron Knob, SA
SKU: 438
Size 8cm x 2cm
A sooty grey black stalactite recovered from a cavity in the pit wall in the mid 1990's. I have always thought these were just goethite, but have always noticed the distinct lack of a radiating needly structure of goethite on a broken surface. Recent analysis has shown these to be a intimate mixture of cryptomelane and lithiophorite. The stalactites have concentric banding on broken surfaces and probably different layers represent the two different minerals. The two minerals are visually impossible to tell apart.
