Hematite, Iron Knob Quarry, Iron Knob, SA
Size 5cm x 3cm
A miniture sized speciman of bright shiny, micaceous hematite. This speciman is from the Iron Knob Quarry, NOT the Iron Monarch Quarry. The Iron Knob pit was a small orebody that was opened up in the very early days of mining here. It contained some very high grade ore, that was blended with the lower grade ore from Iron Monarch, to bring it up to a grade suitable for the blast furnace at Whyalla.
This pit was not known for mineral specimans and did not contain any of the unusual minerals found in the neighbouring pit. I have two specimans from this pit, one of these micaceous hematites like this one and a piece of iridescant coloured hematite that I self collected back in the late eighties, just before the pit was closed. Specimans were virtually non existant, and this would be the only one I have for sale.
