Hematite, Iron Prince West Opencut, Iron Baron, SA
Size 6cm x 5cm
Piece of massive high grade hematite ore, with a iridescant coating covering most of the front display surface. This small opencut exploited a small but rich hematite orebody at the top of the western wall of the old Iron Prince pit. The original Iron Prince pit closed in the early 90's and is now full of mill tailings from current mining. This small orebody was found and mined out in a short period of time about 10 years ago now. These hematites were the only specimans produced from this opencut, and there were only about a dozen pieces collected, when I visited. No one else collected any. Pit is now closed and filled with waste rock from other areas.
