Hausmannite, Iron Monarch Quarry, Iron Knob, SA

SKU: 577

Size 11cm x 7cm

Hausmannite is a manganese oxide mineral and was found associated with the manganese rich ore from between the two dykes on the north wall of the pit. It was found in three environments, all in this area. The first being an open fracture on the RL160 bench, this produced pseudo octahedral crystals to 1cm in clusters, these were the best and the rarest specimans. Secondly with the rare minerals in the manganese carbonate zone, it formed perfect micro sized crystals in a variety of habits. last up it occured as joint fillings in this area, which is where this came from. In one photo there are two empty casts in the hausmannite, these appear to have been crystals of another mineral and since etched out, it has never been proven what these were. The casts exhibit flat sides and angled corners, suggesting a crystal form. Old time speciman.
