Gorceixite, Hematite, Quartz, Iron Monarch Quarry, Iron Knob, SA
Size 4cm x 3cm
A miniture sized speciman of a rare phosphate mineral, that was found in the northern wall of the pit.
The gorceixite on this speciman is a cream coloured mineral, although it is stained reddish orange by hematite. Under magnification there are hematite and quartz crystals as the associated minerals. Probably mined in the 1970's, when the jaspillite waste rock was being mined from the north wall.
Not an overly attractive speciman , but a good representative of one of the rare phosphate minerals from here. Even if mine access was available, it is impossible to collect anything like this these days as even the old dumps from this period of mining are covered over.
