Goethite, Iron Cavalier Opencut, Iron Baron, SA
Size 4cm x 2cm
A thumbnail sized piece of matrix covered with bright iridescant coloured goethite. It was originally a small pit opened in the 80's and abandoned when the higher grade ore ran out. During recent mining operations it was reopened and exploited a larger reserve of low grade ore. The early pit and the recent opencut never produced anything in the way of specimans. I was able to visit on one occasion about 5 years ago, and this was all that I could find. It has since been closed and access is not possible. Back of speciman has been cut to rid excess matrix, but cut not visible from front. A big hole very devoid of specimans !
