Gibbsite, Iron Baron Quarry, Iron Baron, SA
Size 6cm x 4cm
Miniture sized speciman of druzy Gibbsite crystals with an unusual brownish/red colour. Gibbsite rarely forms crystals anywhere in the world, and at the Iron Baron pit there was one occurance of drusy crystals found in the late 80's or early 90's. Most were a greyish colour , but one boulder was found by myself on a waste dump that contained these coloured specimans, although this was many years after mining of this pit. I searched everywhere on that dump and couldn't find another piece. This dump has since be rehabilitated. The open pit was closed around the early 90's and has not been reopened during recent mining and remains inaccessable.
