Calcite, Iron Prince Quarry, Iron Baron, SA
Size 8cm x 3cm
These are real old timer specimans from the Iron Prince pit, collected sometime in the 1970's. One of the very few discoveries of calcite in this pit. Under magnification the crystals are tabular and quite gemmy, they are a greyish brown colour due to the matrix underneath, which is probably massive dolomite. These were around for a short time during mining at one end of the pit, but were mined out rather quickly. At the time few workers were interested in minerals and very little was recovered. A few pieces had small clear quartz crystals on the calcite, such as the other speciman on this website. Obtained years ago from a mine worker who collected them himself.
